How to position your site on ChatGPT: SEO optimization tips

Learn how to position your site on ChatGPT and gain more visibility with content, SEO and digital authority strategies.

Have you noticed that ChatGPT is increasingly being used as a search tool? A lot of people are leaving Google aside and turning directly to artificial intelligence to find answers, recommendations and even links. And this opens up a new opportunity for anyone with a website: to be referred by ChatGPT.

In this article, I’m going to show you how to position your site on ChatGPT in a strategic, practical and efficient way. Without any further ado, let’s get straight to the point.

But first: does ChatGPT use Google to position the site?

No. ChatGPT doesn’t do direct Google searches, unless it has internet access enabled (as in the version with web browsing). However, even without this function, it can still respond based on public information from the internet – including pages indexed on Google, well-structured articles, data from reliable websites and content with good SEO.

In other words: if your site is well ranked on Google, organized and optimized, there is a good chance that it will be cited or recommended by ChatGPT in the responses.

So how do I get my site to appear on ChatGPT?

1. Create original, useful and specific content

ChatGPT values quality content – just like Google. But here’s the kicker: the more specific and well-explained your content is, the more likely it is to be used as the basis for a response.

Use the Feynman Technique: explain as if you were talking to a child. Be direct, clear and practical. This helps ChatGPT understand your content better and suggest it more easily.

Practical tip: Create articles focusing on questions that people would ask. Example: “How to position my site on ChatGPT?” (title of this article).

2. Use an AI-friendly structure

The structure of your content directly influences your positioning. Use clear headings (H1, H2, H3), short paragraphs, simple sentences and transition words to guide reading.

In addition, strategically distribute your keyword (such as “position website on ChatGPT”) throughout the text: in the title, subheadings, introduction, conclusion and at least one internal link.

3. Optimize for SEO (yes, it’s still crucial!)

Even though ChatGPT doesn’t work like a traditional search engine, it is still based on content indexed by search engines. So if you want to appear in AI responses, you need to rank well on Google.

Here are 5 quick practices:

  • Use keywords with clear search intent
  • Optimize your site’s loading time
  • Create captivating meta descriptions
  • Do internal linking (as I’m doing here in this article)
  • Publish frequently and consistently

4. Become a reliable source

ChatGPT tends to cite reliable sources. And how do you become one?

  • Have an authoritative domain (work on backlinks)
  • Use HTTPS and keep your site secure
  • Show who you are (author, team, real contacts)
  • Write with authority on the subject (show that you understand the topic)

5. Use structured data

Have you heard of schema.org? These are markings in your site’s code that help mechanisms such as Google (and therefore ChatGPT) to better understand the content of your page.

You can bookmark it:

  • Articles
  • Recipes
  • Products
  • Services
  • Reviews

These markings increase the chance of your page being used as a reliable and structured source, something that ChatGPT values highly.

What if ChatGPT has internet access?

That’s even better! Because then it can browse in real time, and if your content is well-ranked, optimized and reliable, it can recommend direct links to your site.

You could even try it out: ask for something like “Show me the best websites on branding in Portuguese” and see which ones come up.

In short: how to position your site on ChatGPT

If you want your site to appear on ChatGPT, you have to:

  • Create useful and original content
  • Use a clear and objective structure
  • Optimize for SEO (yes, it’s still necessary)
  • Be seen as a reliable source
  • Include structured data when possible

Remember: it’s not magic, it’s a construction.
